Regular Foot-Care And Athletes

The foot is made up of 33 joints, 26 bones and 19 muscles with more than 100 ligaments. It is safe to
say the foot is evolved and prepared for hard work. Athletes need to pay particular attention to their
feet to preserve the support and balance that they need for running, jumping and other intense
activities. The foot is a complex structure and very strong, but that doesn’t mean it cannot get worn
out by everyday use.

The intense sports training of jumping, running and having our feet hit hard surfaces does take its toll.
Athletes need to take care of their feet more so than others. Athlete’s feet are prone to injuries from
repetitive motions, stress on the bones, overuse of the joints and many fungal infections.
It is important for athletes to have a proper foot care scheme to prevent as many injuries and
conditions as they possibly can.

Common foot complaints in athletes:

  • Inflammation of the Achilles tendon
  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Blisters
  • Inflammation from the fluid sac in the cushion between the bone and tendon
  • Fungal infections
  • Inflammation in the ball of the foot
  • Inflamed tissue that connects the heel to the toes

There are many tips that athletes need to follow to prevent injuries and common infections in the foot. Feet need to be clean and healthy as much as they possibly can be.

  • Keep your feet dry and clean
  • Using lotions on your heel to prevent them from cracking
  • Change socks throughout the day if you are prone to smelly and sweaty feet
  • Wear shoes that fit correctly to avoid blisters and corns
  • Always dry in between the toes after you shower
  • Wear shower shoes in public bathrooms to avoid catching fungal infections
  • Wear cotton socks that are breathable
  • Gradually increase the duration of workouts
  • Avoid activity that causes you strain and pain in the feet
  • If an injury occurs be sure to allow yourself time to heal

A podiatrist is a specialist who you visit to diagnose and treat diseases, infections and injuries within the feet and ankles. Most foot problems have similar symptoms like inflammation, swelling, redness, and
pain. This is why it is best to see an expert to diagnose the problem. The health of your feet is their
main goal so having a diagnostic screening test done will bring up any problems within the foot and
ankles. A podiatrist can even spot potential ingrown toenails and corns starting to come which can
be painful and irritating. Getting onto common foot problems early is the best thing to do so athletes
can get back out to their business as soon as possible

for the affected the area and just friendly advice when you need it in regards to proper feet treatment.
When you are an athlete, your feet are most important because if something is wrong you cannot perform to your best ability, therefore, you are at a loss until it heals, and the problem gets fixed. Look after your feet as much as you can to ensure you are preventing as many problems as possible.
